私はこれまで 数々の「アルファ雄」を見てきました チンパンジーのアルファ雄です 本日はアルファ雄とは何か お話ししたいと思います 人間に近く アルファ雄が存在する チンパンジーから 学べることは沢山あるからです Well,/ I have known many alpha males/ in my life,/ chimpanzee alpha males,/ and I'm going to talk/ about what an alpha male is,/ because I think/ we can all learn a lot/ from our close relatives/ where we have alpha males.//
アモスを例に挙げましょう 若い雄のチンパンジーで アルファ雄でした 非常に人気者でしたが 病気になってしまい 地位を失いました チンパンジーの雄は 弱くなった仲間を １〜２km先からでも 見分けられるので アモスは攻撃され 地位を失い どんどん衰弱していき ついには隔離しなければ ならなくなりました And/ as an example,/ I want to give/ you/ Amos,/ a male/ that I knew/ who was a young male/ and he was alpha male,/ he was very popular,/ but he got sick/ and he lost his position/ because,/ you know,/ chimpanzee males/ they can spot from a mile away/ if you are weak/ and they went for him,/ and he lost his position,/ and then/ he got sicker and sicker/ until at some point/ we had to isolate him.//
群れは草の生い茂る島に 生息していて 檻に入れて隔離しなければ なりませんでしたが 仲間がアモスに近づけるように 檻は開けておきました The group lived on a grassy island,/ and we had to isolate/ him/ in a cage,/ but we cracked open/ the cage/ so that the rest of the chimps still had access/ to him.//
すると感動的な 出来事が起こりました And what happened/ was most touching.//
仲間たちが 食べ物を持ってきたり ねぐらを作ったり 中にくるまって寝るための木毛を 持ってきたりもしました 雌たちはアモスの背中に 木毛を敷いてあげていました Other chimps would bring food/ to him,/ they would bring wood wool/ to him,/ which is this thing/ that they use to sleep in/ and build nests/ out of,/ and females would put the wood wool/ behind his back.//
ずっしりと壁にもたれかかるアモスを まさに病院で患者を看病するように 枕を作ってあげていました He was leaning heavily/ against the wall,/ and the way/ we do with pillows/ to patients/ in a hospital,/ they were putting/ that stuff/ behind his back.//
私はこれこそ「アルファ雄」の あり方だと思いました And I thought,/ this is the way/ to go for an alpha male.//
アモスは愛され 尊敬され みんなに看病されていました いつもこうはいきません 地位を失った後 不幸な末路を辿る雄もいるからです He was loved and respected,/ and everyone was taking care of him,/ and this is not always/ how it goes,/ because some males don't end so well/ when they lose their position.//
つまりアモスはリーダーとして 好かれた雄だと言えます アルファ雄について検索すると アルファ雄になる方法といった類の ビジネス書が氾濫しています 中身は 周りをたたきのめし 周囲より抜きん出て 自分がボスであることを知らしめ 逆らうのを許さない といったものです So Amos was an example of a male/ who was liked as a leader,/ and I think the term alpha male,/ if you look it up/ on the internet,/ you will find all these business books/ that tell you/ how to be an alpha male,/ and what they mean/ is/ how to beat up/ others/ and beat them/ over the head/ and let them know/ that you are boss/ and don't mess with me/ and so on.//
このようなアルファ雄は 要は いじめっ子です And basically/ an alpha male/ for them is a bully.//
このような説明は 本当に残念でなりません 私自身『チンパンジーの政治学』 という本の著者として 「アルファ雄」という言葉に 一部 責任があるからです この本をニュート・ギングリッジが 新人の連邦議会議員に薦め And I really don't like that kind of description,/ because I am actually partly responsible/ for the term "alpha male"/ because I wrote this book "Chimpanzee Politics,/"/ which was recommended by Newt Gingrich/ to freshmen congressmen.//
何の役に立ったのかは知りませんが とにかく本は推薦され その後「アルファ雄」という言葉は 広く知られるようになりました I don't know/ what good/ it did,/ but he recommended/ that book/ to them,/ and after that the term "alpha male"/ became very popular.//
しかしこの言葉は誤った意味合いで 使われているように思います But I think/ it is used in a mischaracterization.//
表面的な意味合いで使われており 本当のアルファ雄とは何かが 伝わっていません It's used in a very superficial way/ that doesn't relate to/ what a real alpha male is.//
今日はそこをご説明します And so/ I'm here/ to explain/ what/ that is.//
この用語自体は もっと前から存在していました The term/ itself goes back/ actually much further.//
1940年代 50年代の オオカミの研究にまで遡ります 定義はいたってシンプルです It goes back/ to the '40s and '50s,/ research/ on wolves,/ and basically/ the definition is very simple.//
最高位の雄がアルファ雄なのです The highest ranking male is the alpha male.//
最高位の雌はアルファ雌です The highest ranking female is the alpha female.//
霊長類が作るグループには全て アルファ雄とアルファ雌が１頭ずついます それ以上はいません 必ず１頭です Every primate group has one alpha male,/one alpha female,/ not more/ than that,/ there's only one.//
その仕組みを説明します And I will explain/ how that goes.//
まず第１に ボディランゲージです So first,/ the body language.//
ここに２頭の雄チンパンジーがいます 同じ大きさです しかし１頭は立って歩いており 毛は逆立っていて 大きな石を手に持っています こちらがアルファ雄です What you see/ here is two male chimpanzees/ who are the same size,/ but one is walking upright,/ has his hair up,/ has a big rock/ in his hand,/ and he's the alpha male.//
もう１頭は「パント・グラント」という 挨拶的な音声を発し 服従的な態度で お辞儀をしています これはチンパンジーが 安定した関係性を築くために 一日に何度も行う儀礼です The other male is pant-grunting/ to him,/ is being submissive/ to him/ and bowing for him,/ and that is the sort of ritual/ they need to go/ through many times/ a day/ in order to have a stable relationship.//

お見せするのはアルファ雄に パント・グラントする雌チンパンジーです 見てください What you will see/ here is a female pant-grunting/ to an alpha male/ and you will see/ how that goes.//
雄が近づいています 雌は雄に対して唸り The male is approaching,/ she grunts at him.//

雄は体中の毛を逆立てて 誇示行動を見せています He has all his hair up/ and he displays.//
私は少々近づきすぎていますね I'm actually standing/ far too/ close.//
チンパンジーのほうが ずっと強いので この撮影中は少々不用心でした A chimpanzee is far stronger/ than I am,/ and I just was not very prudent,/ this particular video.//
さて何が起こっていたかというと アルファ雄は体を持ち上げ 二本足で立ち 腕を広げていました So what you saw him/ do is he was lifting himself up/ and standing on two legs,/ and putting his arms out.//
これを「二足ふんぞり歩き」と言い That's called the bipedal swagger.//
高位の雄によく見られる行動です 非常にわかりやすいですよね 人間も同様のことをしますから It's a very common posture/ in high-ranking males,/ and it's very recognizable/ because humans do this kind of stuff.//
人間がいつもやっていることです Humans do this all the time.//
この写真が特に興味深い点は 両側の年長の男性にあります And what I really like about this particular picture is the two old guys/ to the side.//
非常にチンパンジー的です This is very chimpanzee.//
チンパンジーの場合 通常 最盛期を過ぎた 年長の雄がいます もう自力ではアルファ雄に なることができませんが しかし 策を立てたり 連合を組んだり 他の雄の影で動き In chimpanzees,/ we have usually old males/ who are over the hill,/ who can not be alpha male/ themselves anymore,/ but they start playing/ games and forming coalitions,/ and behind the backs of others.//
多大な影響力を持つようになるのです 実際にアルファ雄よりも影響力を持つ ― 年配の雄がいたりするわけです And they become extremely influential,/ and you may actually have old males/ who are more influential/ than the alpha male himself.//
例を挙げましょう かつて私が働いていた オランダの動物園で よく観察していた３頭の雄です 中央の雄は17歳のアルファ雄です Just as an example,/ the three males/ that I used to work/ with most/ at the Dutch zoo long ago,/ where I worked,/ and the middle male here is a 17-year-old alpha male.//
横にいる 毛づくろいの相手は ２倍年寄りで 17歳の雄を リーダーに選びました The male/ whom he is grooming on the side is twice as old,/ and this old male has made him/ the leader.//
この年長の雄がどれだけ大きな力を 持っているか想像できるでしょう 現在のアルファ雄の地位を 仕立てあげたのですから So/ you can imagine/ that that old male has an enormous amount of power,/ because he has made the alpha male alpha male.//
右側にいるのは 単独では最も強い雄です The male/ on the right is individually the strongest male.//
檻の中で観察すると この雄は 他２匹のそれぞれとの仲は 悪くないことがわかります In captivity,/ you can test it out,/ and you can know/ that this male has no trouble/ with either one.//
他２匹が手を組んだときに限って うまくいかないのです He has only/ trouble/ with the combination of the two.//
連合の形成は チンパンジー社会を 私たちが思うよりも 複雑なものにしているのです And so/ the coalition formation/ that goes on/ in chimpanzee society makes it much more complex/ than you think.//
例えば 群れの中で 最も体の小さな雄が アルファ雄になれたりもします It means,/ for example,/ that the smallest male/ in a group can be the alpha male.//
最も大きく力も強い 必要はないのです You don't need to be the biggest and strongest male.//
最も小さい雄でも よい仲間を持ち 仲間の機嫌を保ち または雌の支持があれば アルファ雄になれます The smallest male,/ if he has the right friends/ and keeps them happy,/ or he has female support,/ he can be the alpha male.//
連合という仕組みは 何もかもを複雑にしてしまうのです 私はここアメリカでいつも 予備選挙が終わるのを 心待ちにしています 党の団結を世に示す 必要がある時期だからです So the coalition system makes everything complex,/ and I'm always waiting/ here/ in the US/ for the primaries,/ the end of the primaries,/ because that's a moment/ where you need to demonstrate/ unity.//
まずはチンパンジーが 団結を示す様子をお見せしましょう Now let me first show you/ how the unity is shown in chimpanzees.//
左手の雄２頭は 並んで座っています What you see/ here is two males/ on the left/ who are standing together.//
大きな犬歯が見えますね You also see the big canine teeth/ that they have.//
「自分たちは手を組んでいる 結束しているのだ」と 群れ全体に対して はっきり示しているわけです And they're standing/ together/ and they demonstrate to the rest of the group,/ "We are together.// We are a unit."//
右側の２頭は シンクロして歩いています The males/ on the right are walking together/ in synchrony.//
これも結束を示す 方法のひとつです That's another way of demonstrating/ that you are together.//
政治における連合において 団結を示すことは 非常に重要なのです だから 私はいつも予備選挙での その瞬間を楽しみにしているのです というのも たとえ党内で 対立している２人がいても どこかで結束する必要が あるからです And so/ demonstrating unity is extremely important/ in a coalition system,/ and/ as I said,/ in the primaries always/ I'm waiting/ for that moment/ because then/ you have two members of the same party/ who have been fighting with each other,/ and they need to come together/ at some moment.//
おかげで非常に気まずい状況になります And it leads to very awkward situations.//
仲の悪い人同士でも 互いを受け入れ 結束する必要がありますから これこそ政党の団結に不可欠なのであり さもなければ 党は崩壊してしまうかもしれません People/ who don't like each other need/ to embrace each other/ and stand together,/ and that's absolutely essential/ for the unity of the party,/ and/ if you don't do that,/ the party may fall apart.//
例えばこの状況みたいに うまくいかない場合 （笑） And so/ if it doesn't go well,/ like in this particular case --/ (Laughter)
党にとっては最悪です 団結を示していないのですから then/ the party is in deep doo-doo/ because they have not demonstrated unity.//
このように結束は 政治的な連合において特に重要で これは人間もチンパンジーも同じです So/ that's a very important part of the coalition system,/ and that's something/ that we share between humans and chimpanzees.//
では どうしたらアルファ雄に なれるのでしょうか？ Now,/ how do you become an alpha male?//
まず第一に 堂々としていて 威厳があることです 時には活力も見せつけ 自らの強さを知らしめます そうするには 様々な方法があります First of all,/ you need to be impressive/ and intimidating/ and demonstrate your vigor/ on occasion/ and show/ that you are very strong,/ and there's all sorts of ways of doing that.//
しかし一方で 寛大さも必要です But other things/ that you need to do/ is you need to be generous.//
例えばリーダーを 引きずり降ろそうという 運動をしている雄たちは ２〜３ヶ月かかるので その間に 群れの連合関係を 色々と試すわけですが 非常に寛大になります So,/ for example,/ males/ who go on a campaign/ to dethrone the leader,/ which may take two or three months/ where they're testing/ all the coalitions/ in the group,/ they also become extremely generous.//
誰にでもすぐ食べ物を分け与え They share food very easily/ with everyone.//
雌が抱える赤ん坊を くすぐったりもします Or they start to tickle/ the babies of the females.//
雄チンパンジーは普段 赤ん坊に特段興味を示しません しかし このような運動の最中は 赤ん坊に興味を示し くすぐったりして 雌たちに取り入ろうとするのです They're normally,/ male chimpanzees,/ not particularly interested/ in infants,/ but when they are campaigning like that,/ they get very interested/ in infants/ and they tickle them,/ and they try to curry/ favor/ with the females.//
もちろん人間も同じで 選挙活動で赤ん坊を抱き上げる 立候補者に 非常に興味を惹かれます So/ in humans,/ of course,/ I am always intrigued by these men/ who are candidates/ and hold babies up/ like this.//
赤ん坊には不本意でしょうが （笑） This is not particularly/ something/ that babies like --/ (Laughter)/
「高い高い」は世界に向けて アピールする方法と化しているので 立候補者としては やらざるを得ないわけです but/ since it is a signal/ to the rest of the world,/ they need to hold/ them/ in the air.//
また 非常に興味を惹かれたのは 前回の大統領選で 女性が立候補した時のこと 赤ん坊の抱え方は こんな感じでした 赤ん坊が好む抱き方です And I was really intrigued by,/ when we had a female candidate/ in the last election,/ the way/ she held/ babies was more like this,/ which is/ what babies really like.//
しかし もちろん 男性の立候補者と違って 赤ん坊を上手に抱えられると 示す必要はありませんでした But she of course didn't need to send/ the message/ that she could hold a baby/ without dropping it,/ which was/ what the man was doing.//
これはよくある戦術です アルファ雄を目指す 雄チンパンジーは かなりの時間をかけて 様々な仲間に 取り入ろうとするのです So this is a very common tactic,/ and male chimpanzees,/ they spend a lot of time/ currying favor/ with all sorts of parties/ when they are campaigning.//
では アルファ雄が得る特権と 支払う犠牲とはなんでしょうか？ Now,/ what are the privileges/ and the costs of being an alpha male?//
最大の特権は雌です The biggest privilege is females.//
食べ物は重要ではありません Food is really irrelevant.//
もし発情期の雌がいて その雌に性的興味を抱いた場合 雄は食べなくても 一週間は生きられますから Male chimpanzees can go a week/ without food/ if there's a female/ in estrus/ and they're sexually interested/ in her.//
食べ物は二の次です Food is secondary/ to sex.//
雄チンパンジーは ― 我々生物学者は もちろん これに説明をつけられます セックスは繁殖につながり 繁殖の成功は すなわち進化につながり And so/ the male chimpanzees --/ and we evolutionary biologists,/ of course,/ we have an explanation/ for this,/ is/ that sex leads to reproduction,/ and reproductive success is the measure of evolution.//
こうしてあらゆる生物は 進化するということです That's/ how everything evolves.//
群れの高位にいることで 繁殖に成功できるなら 群れの上位に登りたいという 願望がおのずと生まれます And so/ if males can enhance their reproductive success/ by being high ranking,/ you get automatically/ the ambition/ to be high ranking/ in the males.//
これが特権です So/ that's the privilege.//
犠牲の一つはもちろん 支持者の機嫌を取らなければ ならないことです The costs,/one cost is/ of course/ that you need to keep/ your partners happy.//
年長の雄の支持によって リーダーになった場合 その雄と雌たちとの 性交を許さなければなりません So/ if you come to power/ with the support of an old male,/ you need to let/ that old male mate/ with females.//
でないと年長の雄から 怒りを買うことになります そして支持者を失います If you don't do that,/ that old male is going to get/ mad/ at you,/ and you're going to lose/ him/ as a partner.//
このように 取引が行われているのです So there's a transaction/ going on.//
アルファ雄になる支援をしてくれた 支持者の機嫌を取らなければならない If you become alpha male/ this way,/ you need to keep/ your partners happy.//
これが犠牲の一つです And so/ that's one of the costs.//
２つ目は その地位が 狙われていることです The second cost is/ that everyone wants your position.//
アルファ雄という地位は 非常に重要で 誰もが 狙っているため 四六時中 警戒が必要です Alpha male position is a very important position,/ and everyone wants to take/ it/ from you,/ and so/ you constantly have to watch/ your back.//
油断は禁物です You have to be extremely vigilant.//
他が手を組むのを 邪魔しなければならなかったり 雄チンパンジーがよくやることです For example,/ you have to disrupt/ the coalitions of others/ and that's/ what male chimpanzees do quite a bit.//
「分断し統治せよ」戦略を取るのです Divide and rule strategies,/ they have.//
非常にストレスの溜まる地位であり それを証明するデータもあります And so/ that's a very stressful situation,/ and we actually have data/ on this.//
実地調査から得たデータです チンパンジーではなく ヒヒを対象としています ヒヒの糞便を採取し 糖質コルチコイドを分析しました The data comes from the field,/ from baboons not chimpanzees/ in this case,/ where they did fecal samples/ on the baboons/ and they analyzed them/ for glucocorticoids.//
このグラフを見ると ヒヒの雄が低位であるほど 糞便中コルチゾールが 高いことがわかります しかしアルファ雄の糞便は 最低位の雄より高レベルの コルチゾールを含んでいます アルファ雄はモテて最高だと 思うかもしれませんが 非常にストレスの多い地位であると 生理学的に証明できるわけです And what you see/ here is a graph/ where you see/ that the lower/ ranking the male baboon is,/ the higher is his cortisol level/ in the feces,/ but the alpha male,/ as you see,/ has just as high a level/ as the lowest-ranking males,/ and so/ you may think/ that being alpha male is nice and dandy/ and is wonderful,/ but it's actually/ a very stressful position,/ and we can demonstrate/ that physiologically.//
では 義務はなんでしょう？ Now,/ what are the obligations?//
ここからが非常に面白いところで 典型的な「アルファ雄」像から 大きく逸れることになります And here,/ for me,/ it gets really interesting,/ and it deviates very much/ from your typical image of the alpha male.//
アルファ雄の義務は ２種類あります The alpha male has two sorts of obligations.//
１つは群れの秩序を保つことです One is to keep the peace/ in the group.//
調整義務といって 群れの争いを調整することです ２つ目は最高の共感者であること 国家を慰める責任者である とも言えます We call/ that the control role,/ to control fights/ in the group,/ and the second is to be the most empathic,/ the consoler/ in chief,/ basically,/ of the nation,/ so to speak.//
まず秩序を保つことについて So first of all,/ keeping the peace.//
この雄は ２頭の雌の 争いを止めています This is a male/ who stops a fight/ between two females.//
左側と右側にいる雌たちは 食べ物を巡って 喧嘩をしていました 雌にとって食べ物は 非常に重要ですからね アルファ雄は２頭の間に立ち 争いを止めました Two females/ on the left/ and the right have been screaming and yelling at each other/ over food,/ because food is very important/ for the females,/ and/ so he stops the fight/ between them/ and stands between them/ like this.//
非常に興味深いのは この時のアルファ雄が 中立的であることです And it's very interesting/ to me/ that alpha males,/ when they do this,/ they become impartial.//
自身の母親や親友を 贔屓したりしません They don't support their mom or their best buddy.//
むしろ争いに割って入り 概して 弱者の味方をします No, no,/ they stop fights,/ and they come up/ for the underdog/ in general.//
これが仲間の多大な支持を 集めるのです 最低位の仲間に 安全を保障してくれるからです And this makes them extremely popular/ in the group,/ because they provide security/ for the lowest-ranking members of the group.//
アルファ雄はここでは 中立的なのです チンパンジーとしては 珍しいことです 通常は自身の仲間を好みますからね 調定の得意なアルファ雄は 群れの秩序を保つのが 上手いというわけです And so/ they become impartial,/ which is an unusual condition/ for a chimpanzee/ to be in,/ because they're usually very fond of their friends/ and so on,/ and these alpha males/ who are good/ at this,/ they can be very effective/ at keeping the peace/ in the group.//
２つ目の義務は 他者に共感を示すことです And the second thing/ they do/ is they show empathy/ for others.//
私は「共感」について 膨大な量の研究をしています 詳しくお話しする時間はありませんが 今や「共感」とは ネズミやイヌ ゾウや霊長類など 様々な種類の動物を対象に 研究が行われている ホットな分野です Now,/ I do an enormous amount of research/ on empathy,/ and I don't have time/ to go into it,/ but empathy is nowadays a topic/ that we study in rodents and dogs and elephants and primates,/ all sorts of animals.//
ここに２頭のヒヒがいます And what you see/ here is two bonobos.//
手前のヒヒは 喧嘩で痛めつけられ The one/ in front has been beaten up/ in a fight.//
奥側のヒヒがもう一方に 腕をまわし 慰めています The one/ in the back puts her arms/ around her/ and consoles her.//
実は 人間の幼児の 共感力も同じく 困っている人への 対応方法で測るのです This is also actually/ how we measure empathy/ in young children,/ by looking at how they respond to distressed individuals.//
位の高い雄に 非常によく見られ And high-ranking males,/ they do a lot of this.//
群れの仲間に 多大な安心感を与えます 例えば地震やハリケーンの 被害を受けた場所に赴き 安心感を与えるのです High-ranking males provide an enormous amount of comfort/ in the group,/ and they go to places/ where there are earthquakes or hurricanes/ and they provide comfort.//
ローマ法王や大統領が していることです The pope does this.// The presidents do this.//
世界中どんなリーダーにも 同様の役割があります All the leaders/ in the world have to do/ this job.//
女王も同様です The queen does it/ and so on.//
慰めや安らぎを与えることが リーダーの重要な任務です They/ all have to do/ this job,/ so/ providing consolation,/ and that's a very important task.//
この 秩序を保ち 安心を与えるという ２つの役割をうまくこなす雄は リーダーとして非常に慕われます 実は リーダー自身にも有利に働くので And males/ who are good/ at these two,/ keeping the peace/ and providing comfort,/ they become extremely popular leaders,/ and there's actually/ some self-interest involved in it.//
群れのためだけの行為ではありません トップの地位を強固にするからです They don't do it just/ for the group,/ because it also stabilizes their position.//
アルファ雄として人気を集め 仲間から尊敬されればされるほど その地位は強固になるのです たとえ他のチンパンジーが 対抗してきても 群れ全体がアルファ雄を 支持するでしょう 群れに良くしてくれるリーダーに 居続けてほしいからです The more popular/ a male becomes as alpha male/ and the more/ the rest of them respects them/ and looks up to them,/ the better/ their position is defended in case it's going to be challenged by somebody else,/ because then,/ of course,/ the whole group is going to support/ that/ male/ because they want to keep/ a leader/ who is good/ for them.//
ですから群れは 良いリーダーにとても協力的で 威張り散らすリーダーには 全く協力しません So the group is usually very supportive of males/ who are good leaders,/ and it's not supportive at all of bullies.//
威張り屋のリーダーが その座を失うときは 非常に不幸な状況に 陥りかねません And when bullies lose their position,/ they may end up/ in a very bad situation there.//
これは慰めの行為に関するデータで This is data actually/ on the consolation behavior.//
チンパンジーから取ったものです 中〜低位のチンパンジーだと 仲間を慰める行為は 雄より雌に多く見られ This is data/ on consolation/ in chimpanzees,/ and you see for the medium- and low-ranking individuals,/ the females do more of it/ than the males.//
これがチンパンジー社会です This is basically the whole community.//
どの哺乳動物でも 同じ結果になります 雌は雄よりも共感力が 高いということです And this is true/ for all the mammal studies/ on empathy is/ that females have more of it/ than males.//
しかしアルファ雄はどうでしょう But look/ at the alpha male.//
慰める行為が 飛び抜けて多いのです The alpha male does far more/ than anybody else.//
これが アルファ雄が慰め役の 筆頭であるということを示すデータです And so/ that's the data/ on alpha males/ being the consoler/ in chief,/ basically.//
最後にお話しするのは アルファ雌についてです The last thing/ I want to say/ is something/ about alpha females.//

ママは群れの中で絶対的な 中心に位置する存在でしたが And Mama was an absolute centrum of the group.//
力ずくで雄たちを支配する力が あったわけではありません So she was not physically capable of dominating the males.//
位は雄たちよりも下でしたが 群れの中心にいたのです 群れの中で大きな問題が発生すると 最後はママの腕の中で 解決していたので She ranked below the males,/ but she was the center of the community,/ and/ if there was big trouble/ in the community,/ everyone would end up/ in the arms of Mama.//
非常に重要な存在でした And/ so she was a very important figure.//
ですから私は アルファ雌の位置付けを 軽視したくないのです And/ so I don't want to minimize/ the position of alpha females/ in the chimpanzee group.//
また チンパンジーと同じくらい 人間に似た種がいます 忘れられがちですが ボノボです And then/ we have a species/ that is equally close/ to us/ as the chimpanzee,/ the bonobo.//
ボノボの世界は雌社会で 「アルファ」的な存在は 大抵の場合 雌です We often forget about the bonobo,/ but the bonobos have a matriarchal society/ and the alpha individual is a female, generally.//
一般的にボノボ社会の トップは雌なのです アルファ雌の決め方や のし上がり方や 役割については ほとんど知られていません ボノボについて自体 未知の部分が多いのです Generally,/ it's a female/ who is at the top of the community,/ and we know much less/ about how this is done/ and how they get to that position,/ and what they do with it,/ because we know much less/ about bonobos/ in general.//
しかし私が強調したいのは リーダーが雄である 必要はないということです そして人間に似たボノボの社会では リーダーは雌なのです But I do want to emphasize/ that the alpha/ in a group doesn't need to be a male,/ and/ that actually/ in one of our close relatives,/ it is a female.//
最後に一言 言わせていただくと 皆さん 人間社会における男性のうち 一家の長や職場のトップや ワシントン つまり 国家の長にあたる人などを アルファ雄と呼びますが チンパンジーに失礼です 間違った呼び方ですから So the message/ I want to leave/ you/ with is/ that if you are looking at men/ in our society/ who are the boss of,/ let's say,/ a family or a business or Washington or whatever,/ you call them/ alpha male,/ you should not insult chimpanzees/ by using the wrong label.//
ただの威張り屋を アルファ雄と呼ばないように You should not call a bully an alpha male.//
大きくて強く 周囲を威圧し侮辱する人が 必ずしもアルファ雄だとは限りません Someone/ who is big and strong/ and intimidates and insults everyone is not necessarily/ an alpha male.//
アルファ雄も様々で チンパンジーにも 威張り屋のアルファ雄が いることがありますが しかしアルファ雄のほとんどは リーダーとしての能力を持ち 社会に溶け込んでいます アモスがそうであったように 愛され 尊敬されています 実際のアルファ雄は 想像とは 違うかもしれませんよ An alpha male has all sorts of qualities,/ and I have seen bully alpha males/ in chimpanzees,/ they do occur,/ but most of the ones/ that we have have leadership capacities/ and are integrated in their community,/ and,/ like Amos/ at the end,/ they are loved and respected,/ and/ so it's a very different situation/ than you may think.//
